Rashaida Melvin, a UGA senior majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences, has been volunteering for our SafeCare program here at Children First, Inc. since August 2012. In addition to being a SafeCare volunteer, she is also helping with the upcoming GleeOff by serving as a liaison for two of the participating high schools and providing feedback for the video submissions.

Looking for a new place to volunteer for the school year, Rashaida found out about the volunteer opportunities through one of her UGA professors and knew it was the perfect fit for her once she learned more about the organization and its mission.

“I love working with an organization that strives to improve the wellbeing of families and parenting skills,” Rashaida said. “I also like that Children First engages in numerous outreach projects as well.”

With SafeCare, Rashaida does a lot of administrative work such as scanning, filing, compiling lesson packets and any other projects that need to be completed. Hoping to attend graduate school for her master’s degree in social work after graduating in the spring, Rashaida knows the work she is doing with Children First will help her in her future career in social work.

As long as she can remember, Rashaida has loved to volunteer and has worked for a variety of philanthropies because she is more passionate about helping people than for any specific cause. Some of the places she has volunteered include: the North East Georgia Food Bank, Boys and Girls Club, St. Mary’s Long Term Care Facility and Learning Ally.

“I volunteer because I truly enjoy helping others and genuinely believe that being a well-rounded individual entails helping those who are less fortunate than myself,” Rashaida said. “I know that if I were in need of assistance, I would want others to volunteer to help me as well.”

Rashaida’s primary reason for volunteering for Children First is because she wanted to work with improving parenting skills. “I believe that if parents are well equipped with good parenting skills, then children will develop into successful, well-rounded adults,” Rashaida said.

When she is not volunteering, Rashaida enjoys dancing and spending time with her family and friends. She also devotes a lot of time to her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. In fact, she is on her sorority’s step team that has already won two step shows this year. Since she loves her sorority and has been dancing since the age of three, the step team has been a perfect fit for her.

After a long week of school, volunteering and sorority responsibilities, Rashaida’s ideal weekend would involve watching movies, reading a book and getting to sleep in late on a Saturday.
