Foster children could be facing difficulties put in place by their birth parents years into their adulthood. A recent article in the Sacramento Bee explains how some of these children may have been taken advantage of by their birth parents or others with access to their private information. These young adults are unveiling social security numbers tied with unpaid bills and a credit history filled with accounts in poor standing. This information is available to many different
guardians through out a foster child's life. Graduating out of foster care at 18 is difficult enough, but discovering that your social security number may have been abused by someone else in your life is a hard thing to accept. Such difficulties are hindering their futures. Those who have hopes of attending college are not eligible to apply for loans, and those looking for employment cannot pass background checks. All solutions seem to point to a bill that would require annual credit checks for children in foster care. To read the whole article, click here.
We Need CASAs like you!
Seventeen new children entered foster care in the month of June alone. Each of them need someone like you on their side! We're looking for new places to recruit CASAs and want to know where you think we should go to speak, hang our posters or if you have someone in mind that would make a great advocate! Please send your ideas to email@example.com
