Athens-Oconee CASA will be hosting their first ever Foster Care Candlelight Vigil on November 5th. The event will begin at 5:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 355 Pulaski Street. After gathering, we will walk, with electric candles in hand, from the church to the courthouse, and there we will here from community members about their experiences with the foster care system. At First Baptist Church in the fellowship hall, there will be time before and after the walk for local agencies to share information on how you can support and be involved in the local foster care system.
The event is free to attend, and our goal is to have over 300 attendees to represent each child in the local foster care system. Families are welcomed! If you plan on attending, would like to volunteer, or are an agency that would like to participate, please refer to the Events page on our website to submit an interest form. You can also stay up to date on the event on Facebook and with the hashtag #CASAfostercarevigil. On Thursday, September 27th, 2018, CASA's newest volunteers participated in training sessions to learn the ins and outs of being a CASA. There were two different training sessions that day, and there were a total of 22 people in attendance. Having that many new volunteers is extremely exciting! Along with getting to know each other, new volunteers learned so much about the steps of CASA cases. Volunteers learned the basics and about life as a CASA through games, exercises, and group activities. They spent some time working on practice case studies, where they had to practice following through with communication by meeting with each other to discuss different viewpoints on the details of a case. Also, Catherine Tillman (pictured to the left) used a large puzzle to teach the volunteers about the different components of CASA cases. We are so pleased to welcome these new volunteers to our CASA team. Each and every one of them are crucial to making sure children in our local foster care system are being properly represented. We hope that you can join us in thanking all 22 of our new volunteers for dedicating their time to support local children. |
